Moments of Clarity by Jeanie Barton and Angels in the Architecture
Jazz singer songwriter Jeanie Barton (voted Best Newcomer at the Marlborough Jazz Festival in 2015) follows up her acclaimed self-penned 2010 album The Magical Mirror [“It’s GREAT! It’s catchy as Hell!” Shane MacGowan, The Pogues] with the EP; Moments of Clarity. This release is an insightful collaboration with double bassist, producer and Nottingham University Professor in Music Technology, Simon Paterson (of Angels in the Architecture).
The 5 original tracks were recorded with Jeanie on vocals and keys and Simon on bass, percussion and production. The opening song; ‘Who Wants to Live Forever’ featuring the inimitable Tony Kofi on alto saxophone was described as “Really powerful .. Just divine!” by Dean Jackson at BBC Introducing. Another guest on track 4 ‘Convenience’ is trumpeter Hugh Pascall; graduate of the Royal Academy and Paris Conservatoire. All four contributors to this EP are from Nottingham.
Jeanie’s songs explore themes as diverse as life after death, truth seeking, our connection to the cosmos and fidelity; she has yet again opened a Pandora’s Box of nostalgic material, which defies swift definition. Paterson’s input adds an experimental electro-orchestral angle to the production.
The CD and digital launch on May 14 2018 is celebrated with a Nottingham Jazz Steps Library Tour; starting at Beeston (14), then Worksop (15), Southwell (16) and West Bridgford (17) tickets are available in advance from the Libraries direct, the shows start at 7.30pm. These songs and more will be brought to life by Jeanie on vocals (and keys for some) with Matt Ratcliffe on keys, Simon Paterson on double bass and Ian Beestin on drums. This same team will take their show to festivals throughout 2018 (TBA).
